Dear Pro. Schwartz,
I am sorry for this late email. And I am also sorry that I have other
classes this afternoon so I could not visit you and discuss the essay in
FEM 3105 with you this afternoon.
In the essay I want to analyze the American Showtime's TV series The L
Word ( about a group of middle-class lesbians' lives in west LA)from the
perspectives of some feminist theories and queer theories. In this essay's
structure, first I will give a brief introduction to this soap opera and
it's audience including both heterosexuals and gay people. Secondly I will
analyze that although it clams itself a lesbian TV opera, it sometimes has
to follow some 'norms' from the majority's expectation and stereotype for
the lesbian and gay. Then I will mainly focus on the 'queer things'
revealed on some characters and story lines and these 'queer things'
can subvert not only the 'norms' in the main stream but also the 'norms'
in the minority groups. For example, I will analyze a character called
Jenny about her blurred sexual orientation, and a character called Max
about his gender identity and the fluidity of his sexual orientation, and
Kit, a heterosexual woman who has non-normal love experiences with other
men. Then I will turn into the summary of some politics The L Word used to
try to challenge and subvert the norms in both majority and minority
groups.
I am not going to give a presentation next week and I am going to write a
summary on the article called Getting Wet： The Heteroflexibility of
Showtime's The L Word by Candace Moore in the book Third Wave Feminism and
Television. And I would like to know what is the deadline to summit this
summary?
